OOCS ‘Our Outdoor Community Space’ is a community-developed vision for a flexible, outdoor gathering space in the South-Parkdale Toronto neighbourhood.
Kendall co-facilitated the early community engagement and participatory design phases of this project and has followed the project through preparing detailed drawings, and city approvals. This project was undertaken in partnership with The Greenest City, Friends of Masaryk Park and Popovich Associates. The project is now being considered by the City for funding and implementation.
A diverse group of community members including children, parents and elders, non-English speakers, life-long Parkdale residents and new Canadians all participated in the first visioning workshop. Community members worked through facilitated activities to develop programming goals and envision the types of components that would best support community needs for a shared, outdoor gathering space.
Two concept designs were prepared which community members weighed in on, letting us know their top likes, dislikes and requested additional considerations. The OOCS design was revised and refined to attain the community’s vision for a space that would support their programming asks.
Detailed design drawings have cleared preliminary city planning, maintenance and fire review and approvals and we are hopeful that funding will be granted for a 2018 completion date.
